My Journey To America

Antonio Sandoval, Mexico City

"interviewed by Tony Sandoval"

"once I got that call from my mother I knew my life was going to change. I always thought  that mexico was the best place to live, but then I finally realized that america had became my new home. I started off as a 17 year old boy working in the fields, and now I own my own piece of the american dream."

When my mother called me and told me that I was going to America to study I was shocked. When she told me that I was going to America I was scared and nervous. I was so afraid because I didn’t know how to speak English and I didn’t know anyone over there. Once I left Mexico city, I knew that my life will never be the same. When I was in the plane all I can think about was going back to Mexico. But then I realized that my mother was only trying help me get a better life. When I arrived at the airport I saw my mother and two of half brothers. When I first came to the big city of San Francisco I was so excited. But after two long months of living in San Francisco my mother sent me to Oregon to work in the fields. Working in the fields wasn’t fun at all, I had to work in the hot sun for a year and two months. Some days I would feel miserable and exhausted but then I realized if I wanted to succeed I had to stay here.

When I look back at it, the life style in Mexico vs. the life in U.S is so different. Mexico Is such a bad place to live and raise a family and have a good life. My country is poor and the government is terrible. All the houses in my country are made of cement adobe bricks. In America the houses are great and so much better than the houses in Mexico. Then I realized that in a sense their both equal in a way because if you have money right, if your rich in Mexico and your rich here in America theirs no difference. If your poor or we used to say in Mexico there’s used to be medium people between the rich and poor and now the rich people don’t even exist anymore.

A personal experience that changed my life was when I met my son’s mother. She was the love of my life, she meant every thing to me. I met her in a club in San Francisco and we’ve been together ever since. When she passed I felt like I went rock bottom. I never felt that kind of pain before. But when she passed it made me realize that I had to step up. She made me stronger as a person and as a father. She helped me I a way because I didn’t know how to do all the house hold things. Now I know how to do those I things now. Thanks her she made me stronger and more confident about myself. She was a great person.

My journey to America was worth every second of it. I feel so blessed and lucky that I’m here. I’m glad that my mother brought me here. I might not have education I

have a beautiful home and I have a wonderful family, hell I even have a dog. I just feel blessed that I’m a legal citizen now, and hopefully I’ll become an American citizen someday. The journey was worth it, through all the sweat and tears and hard work it gave me a good full filling life.
